What is this resource? This document synthesizes research to identify evidence-based Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavioral interventions that can be used to augment universal support within an MTSS framework. Interventions are integrated into a rubric-like tool known as an “innovation configuration (IC) matrix” (located in Appendix A), which establishes levels of implementation based on each intervention's critical features.
Why is it valuable?Multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) frameworks have grown increasingly prevalent in schools, with students in need of additional behavioral support receiving evidence-based Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions. This IC matrix consolidates evidence-based Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavioral interventions for improving challenging behaviors of students with severe disabilities into a single tool that can be used to guide improvement, explicitly defining what different levels of implementation look like. In doing so, the IC matrix distills interventions to their essential features while still allowing the flexibility needed by teachers and school communities to make practices work within their unique contexts.
